These exorbitant registration fees are too expensive to be absorbed by manufacturers and thus are eventually passed on to the consumer. To make matters more confusing, a growing number of companies are publishing their products as green without telling you what makes them environmentally friendly or how the “green” status is achieved. So how does one know if they are buying a “green” product other than by looking at the color? “Green” by Kor-Chem will be described step by step below and at least ease the head scratching confusion for comparing environmentally friendly “green” cleaners.
“Green” Cleaners by Kor-Chem
Kor-Chem lists a number of criteria that are important for classifying cleaning products as “Green.” All the information on whether a Kor-Chem product meets the criteria is readily available on the products Technical Data Sheet.
• Non-Toxic
Toxic products and compounds are harmful or lethal to humans, wildlife or other organisms and are not used by Kor-Chem.
• Non-Corrosive
Corrosive chemicals are harmful to humans as well as to the environment.
• Contains no Phosphates
When discharged to the environment, phosphates cause algae to proliferate in lakes, streams, rivers and other bodies of water. With time this leads to
reduced oxygen levels in water and marine life being choked off.
• Contains no Phthalates
This group of chemicals has been coming under increased scrutiny and rightly so. Phthalates have been linked to sperm damage in men
and reproductive defects in newborn boys.
• Contains no Chlorine
A widely used chemical in household bleach and in swimming pools has been know to trigger asthma and is very corrosive to metals and skin.
• Contains no Petroleum Distillates
Are solvents derived from processing crude oil and may contain hazardous chemicals such as benzene.
• Contains no CFC’s or Ozone Depleting Compounds
Ozone depletion leads to actual holes in the ozone layer which means increased levels UVB rays penetrating the to the surface of the Earth.
This can in turn lead to increased exposure to skin cancer, as well as global warming.
• Contains no Carcinogens
Products that are known to cause cancer such as chlorinated solvents.
• Contains no Heavy Metals
Generally meaning toxic metals such as mercury, plutonium and lead.
• Contains no Metal Cross-Linked Polymers
Primarily an issue for floor finishes, metal cross-linked polymers have been linked to aquatic and environmental pollution.
• Non-Flammable
Products with a flash point over 100°F.
• Product shall contain Biodegradable Surfactants
The backbone to every cleaner, surfactants should be readily biodegradable.
• Products are packaged in containers with post consumer recycled content
Bottles using recycled material.
• Products are Concentrates
Concentrates reduce the impact on the environment; less bottles used and less freight hauling.
